Country Pursuit Falconry Demonstrations
Birds of prey have a special fascination for most people. They possess many of the virtues and attributes we most admire; speed, elegance and grace and it is these qualities which Jim Chick hopes to be able to show during the flying demonstrations. Jim, of Country Pursuit, is one of the country’s leading falconers and as one of the first people to fly birds at Country fairs, fêtes etc. he has set a very high standard and endeavours to make each demonstration educational and informative as well as enjoyable to watch.
Jim’s interest in birds started in his teens and for several years he kept and flew racing pigeons. He has been involved with birds of prey for more than 40 years now and has trained and flown a variety of falcons, hawks, eagles and owls.
The falcons, predating exclusively on other birds which they catch in flight, are capable of attaining speeds of up to 120 m.p.h. in a stoop or power dive. Compare them with the majestic African Fish Eagle, a skilful fisherman, snatching a fish weighing 2lbs. or more from the surface of the water, and carrying it back to a lakeside tree to eat at leisure.
The Harris or Bay-winged hawk has a friendly confident attitude to strangers, something which is rare in the bird of prey world. The birds we fly, which have all been bred in captivity, also form part of our static display and can be seen relaxing on the weathering ground where the falconers will be pleased to answer any questions you may have.
Come along and take a closer look at these beautiful creatures.
